Jan 2- 9 2. 01. 7 Family vacation - Review of Ocean Varadero El Patriarca, Varadero. Excellent stay. Booked through West. Jet, terrific package price, good departure times. We are a family of 4 (2 parents, 2 kids). Smooth flight, seamless bus transfer, not too far from the airport on a nice coach bus, comfortable, a/c, good driver. The hotel is beautiful, well appointed and clean.
Our room was not ready until 4pm, but we quickly changed into our suits and jumped in the pool while we waited, had some drinks at the bar and enjoyed the 3. The hotel is comprised of 2 story buildings with 8 units each, very pretty and comfortable, welcoming feeling. The room itself was large, tile floors, nice furniture in good condition, the bathroom was spacious, clean and boasted a full size tub with modern European style faucets, with a separate tiled shower, glass doors, all clean, well kept and very nice. Fluffy white towels, (no washcloths, bring your own if you prefer). Large clothing closets, self- setting safe to store passports/money etc, in room fridge stocked every day with large water bottle, and cans of gingerale, Fanta, etc. Our room was midway between the pool and the beach, excellent location, building 5.
Paths are all lined with flowering shrubs, palms, lovely gardening and attention to detail and cleanliness. The pool is large, with bridges, swim up bar, volleyball net shallow kids area, excellent all- round, clean and spacious. Plenty of chaise lounges. The beach.. fantastic, charming walkway with historic giant cactus and palms lining the way.
Plenty of grass umbrellas and chaise lounges, some a bit older and worn due to the winds/elements, but generally not an issue. Beach volleyball poles/net set up by staff every day for activites, sailing staff for catamaran sail rides (free) or to take you for snorkeling on the reef (for a fee). Always clean and no one harassing you to buy anything, a definite bonus. Very relaxing, easy access to beach bar, fast service, plenty of drinks available, tips optional but appreciated by the friendly staff. We were pleasantly surprised. We had heard Cuban hotel food was not very good. We completely disagree!
The buffet was most excellent, we had fresh fish, chicken, beef, pork dishes every night, varieties of rice, pasta, potatoes in flavourful sautees, in a myriad of ways. Plenty of vegetables, salads, desserts. We were never sick except only because we ate . Fruit not as plentiful as in Ontario, pineapple is much harder and less sweet than we are used to, but grapefruit was lovely, watermelon as well.
Fresh squeezed citrus every day for breakfast, so many ways to eat eggs, you will never be bored, unless you are limited by your imagination. Yogurt, cereal, muesli, variety of breads, and cold cuts, hot sausages, bacon, varieties of jam, honey and so on. No pre- registration req'd for the a la carte, just show up a bit early to line- up as they are popular, and first seating is at 6: 3.
Overall we thoroughly enjoyed this visit the staff were all friendly, helpful, but not in your face. We enjoyed the aquatic show and the circus entertainment, did not attend the disco or the beach party.
This hotel caters to the young, middle and old exceptionally well. Lots for everyone to do. We took the kids snorkeling (loved it, take a bit of bread or a banana with you to attract the schools of fish), we walked to the nearby Eco reserve and had such fun walking through the ! We took the bus tour to Havana, also excellent. A long drive but on a nice bus with an informative tour guide and lunch in a beautiful restaurant.
Would come back in a heartbeat to tour Havana more extensively, such history and culture. I hope that revitalization of the crumbling buildings will continue, I can only imagine how it must have been once upon a time.
Seeing the old cars.. Any car enthusiast will appreciate this. Double- decker to Varadaro was great fun, many amazing artisans in the town, prepare to buy some paintings to bring home, they are fantastic. We hope to come back again some time. Our in- laws had 2 smaller beds in their..
